An E-Bike, or electric scooter, is one of the most popular forms of transportation on the road in China. Everyone's got one, including expats. With that, E-Bikes are hot items for thieves to prey upon, and if you've failed to take the proper steps to secure your ride, you can guarantee that it'll end up in someone else’s hands in the blink of an eye. And hey, that's from my own experience! Here are 5 ways you can protect your scooter/E-Bike in China.
FIRST UP, Make sure you buy an e-bike that comes with an alarm system! I've got 2 alarm functions for my E-Bike. The first is a typical alarm, meaning that once activated the bike will produce a loud sequence of alarms at the slightest touch to thwart off thieves. Check. The next is a silent alarm that will lock the E-Bike so that it will not make a sound but the wheels will be locked and it cannot be driven. Hell yeah!
If possible, DO NOT get a typical lock from the supermarket or your average seller on the street. They can EASILY be snapped by bolt cutters or unlocked by thieves. Instead, head over to the nearest Decathlon store--it's a sports equipment store-- find the bike section, and purchase a B'Twin 16cm 900 Bike D Lock. It's a high security lock equipped with a much needed thick rubber coating for extra protection. It also requires a uniquely shaped key to unlock it, which is not common in China.
A wheel lock is a very efficient tool that can be used to keep thieves from stealing your scooter in China. Hook it on a mechanism located at the back wheel, and once locked, the wheel cannot be moved. B-o-o-y-a-h!
E-Bike batteries get stolen ALL THE TIME across China. Trust me, I know personally! It's almost too easy to break the latch that holds them in place and lift out the battery. That's why you'll notice that many E-bikes across China have a metal plate covering the battery. The plate is held down by a chain that wraps around the floor of the E-bike, and that chain is locked with a lock. This is a great way to curb off thieves from stealing your battery but it is not the best.
Even with a metal plate I've had my E-bike battery stolen 2 times over the course of 1 week. Seriously, one freaking week! The first theft happened during a holiday vacation. I got back into Shanghai and found that my battery had been stolen. Eh, that was my fault; after all, I left it in a parking lot for several days.
And the second? I was barely inside of a convenience store for 10 minutes when I came back outside and found that my new battery had been stolen. WTF! C'mon!
Want to know how the thieves did it each time? All they did was snap the chain wrapped around the metal plate using bolt cutters, lift a latch, and JACKPOT.
With that, the next time I bought a battery I asked the worker to mold down the metal plate to the metal frame of my E-bike. That thing won't come off now!
