Incredible! My first ride on a Shanghai Huangpu River cruise absolutely blew my breath away, so much so that I had to do it twice! My first trip on the Shanghai Huangpu River cruise took place on a chilly day in March 2016, while the latter took place with my colleagues in June. During the 1st trip my girlfriend and I set off from my house in PuDong in the late afternoon and arrived at the cruise terminal after crossing Huangpu River by ferryboat and walking a short distance up the Bund. After 4yrs.+ of living in Kunshan and having made numerous trips to Shanghai, it was actually the first time that I had visited the Bund during the day. Crazy, right? Every previous outing to the Bund had been during the evening or late night, and thus, with the sun out and not a cloud in the sky, I took plenty of photos of the remarkable scenery. We reached the terminal and bought our tickets for the cruise at 5pm. Though the day was spectacularly sunny it was still pretty cold, so we grabbed a seat and cup of tea at Starbucks and caught the 2016 Grammy Awards on a large outdoor screen. Five o’clock rolled around and we boarded the cruise. I was actually hoping that we’d board one of those iconic beetle-shaped cruise ships that I had seen along the river on occasion but we ended up on a fairly “normal looking” ship; a great way to travel nonetheless. To our surprise, we discovered that seating on the ship’s open–air top deck was an extra 20 RMB. Aargh! I guess you just can’t escape someone always trying to bag a few bucks extra out of you when exploring top tourist activities in China. Shortly after departing the docks we were cruising beside the towering skyscrapers riddled across Lujiazui and heading northeast along Huangpu River towards a section of the waterway that I had never previously explored. And then it happened: the most remarkable view I had ever laid eyes upon in Shanghai was right in front of me. We’d pass the Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower and I had the chance to gaze at the attraction in its entirety as it stood in front of the countless other high-rises in Lujiazui, which included Shanghai Tower, the 2nd tallest building in the world, Jinmao Tower, and the Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC). Doesn’t it look pretty awesome!? As the ship continued down the river I had gazed out at more buildings that I had never laid eyes upon. Additionally, one of the best aspects of the cruise down Huangpu River was having a panoramic view of the extraordinary cityscape amidst a stunning Eastern sunset backdrop. Having only moved to Shanghai about 2 months prior, it certainly invoked one of those ‘it’s good to be in Shanghai & China’ moments. After awhile the boat made a quick U–turn around and I managed to grab a great spot on the right side of the ship, careful not to miss a good look at the Bund. Though the skies were overcast on my 2nd trip, theday was strikingly clear and we wound up overlooking the Bund in the best way I had ever seen it before. Tell me these pictures aren’t incredible! If you’re in Shanghai, I HIGHLY recommend hopping on a Huangpu River cruise. At 120 RMB, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss!
